It used to be easy to obtain ROMs for emulators. One could easily go online and download all the games they desired. But there are many reasons why you can’t and shouldn’t now. Legality issues, risk of viruses, and Nintendo’s actions against sharing their ROMs online make downloading ROMs a bad idea.
However, all hope is not lost! It is possible to dump your own games without violating any legal or copyright rules, and therefore have games ready to play on these emulators. In this article we’ll begin discussing how one could legally obtain ROMs of Nintendo games.
Preface
Emulators are very popular nowadays, and they’re a fantastic way of enjoying your favorite classic video games. They come with so many benefits, such as improved resolution and support for any controller or device, to name a few. You can even use a console as a dedicated emulator system. But, of course, you need actual games to play on the emulator.
Nintendo has made this very hard, as of late. They’ve threatened legal action against many ROM hosting sites and had their games taken down. Even if you do manage to find a (sketchy) site that still has ROMs available for downloading, technically you’re breaking the law. But not if you can work around it!
The Legality of Emulators and ROMs
How do you rip Gamecube games on Wii? The best program to use to rip gamecube isos on your wii is CleanRip. It will produce perfect 1:1 images that will work perfectly with nintendont, devolution etc. Just move the iso to a folder on the root of ur SD or USB called games. Put the iso in a folder of the games name and rename the iso to game. GameCube and Wii games may be ripped using a DVD-ROM and either Rawdump 2.0 (see this thread ), or FriiDump. Only DVD-ROM drives have been reported to work for ripping. Any DVD Writer can be used to burn. The DVD-ROM drives that rip are all manufactured by LG Electronics or H-L Data Storage, but are sold under various brand names (see the list.
Legally speaking, downloading ROMs from the internet is pretty much always considered piracy. It’s downloading games you didn’t pay for. Android 5.1.1 lollipop emulator. On the flip side, however, there is nothing illegal about downloading and running emulators. So, if we want to use emulators for their various benefits over standard consoles, how do we get games to use with them legally? The answer is something I want to encourage and teach all readers here to do: dump your own game collection.
The legality of this is that it is perfectly okay to make backups of data that you legally own. So, if you legally own a cartridge or disc, you can take a backup of its data for safe keeping on your hard drive. It’s useful in the event your game gets lost or breaks (the downfall of both discs and cartridges). And it of course has the added benefit of being able to use with emulators.
However, this becomes illegal when you decide to share that game you just dumped. Autotune vst. You end up with two copies of a game, and the person you shared with gets a copy that he or she did not pay for. I would like to make it clear that this article, this blog, and I myself do not support sharing or obtaining games by any illegal means whatsoever. We are only focusing on and encouraging legal methods of obtaining these games.
What Can Be Dumped, and The Methods of Dumping
I’d like to show that it is possible with little to moderate difficulty to obtain ROMs from pretty much anything. Many of these methods involve hacking consoles, which I won’t discuss, but I will include tools needed on those hacked systems. This article simply shows what systems and tools can be used to obtain ROM backups. Future guides will show in detail how to actually use these tools to dump your games. Not recommended by me, but I will include it for informative purposes.
Requires: GameCube with Action Replay or Modchip, SD to memory card adapter, SD Card, Swiss (homebrew loader)

Can dump only GameCube games.
Wii:
Requires: hacked Wii with Homebrew channel, SD Card or USB drive

Can dump Wii and GameCube games.
Wii U:
Requires: hacked Wii U + hacked vWii mode if ripping Wii games, SD Card or USB drive
Tool: Disc2App (Wii U disc), USBLoaderGX or CleanRip (Wii discs), DDD (Wii U digital titles)
Wii or Wii U discs can be dumped, as well as Wii U digital titles.
PC:
Requires: Supported disc drive (see below)

Dump from cartridge using a hacked console
This method is complicated and not recommended. The Nintendo Switch hacking process is much more challenging and risky than the other consoles. You could also get banned by Nintendo for playing games that were dumped (even the original cartridge). But, once again, it’s worth including to show that it is possible!

Part 2: Discs
In part 1 of this guide we discussed the basic methods of legally obtaining backups of your Nintendo game collection. Here in this guide, we’ll go into more detail on how this can be done for disc-based games. So, we’ll cover how to dump Nintendo discs for GameCube, Wii, and Wii U games.
The backups you obtain could then be used with emulators such as Dolphin or Cemu. Or, they could run directly on a modded console without the need for a disc. Remember, we’re focusing on legally obtaining these games and using them for legal purposes.
There are several ways to obtain backups of your discs. It can be done using consoles or even your PC if it’s compatible. Some methods even work with multiple types of discs (e.g. being able to dump GameCube AND Wii games). Although I’ve listed many methods, some aren’t recommended as they may be too complicated or impractical. Ultimately, it comes down to which systems and games you own and which methods are easiest to configure.
Let’s go Dump Nintendo Discs!
GameCube games only – using a modded GameCube
Difficulty: 4 (hard)
We’ll start with the most complicated one. I don’t recommend this, unless you already have a modded GameCube for other purposes. Your money is better spent on a cheap Wii that can easily be modded, or a compatible disc drive for your PC. But, there may be some of you out there who find this method to be exactly what you need!
Needed:
– GameCube
– SD card (no more than 4GB)
– SD Card to Memory card adapter
– Action replay disc
– Or: Modchip & custom disc booting Swiss (homebrew loader)
Required homebrew applications:
– Clean Rip (game dumper)

How To Rip Gamecube Games With Pc
Wii and GameCube games – using a Wii
Difficulty: 2 (easy)
Here’s my favorite method. In fact, it’s what I personally used to dump my Wii and GameCube collection. That’s because there are plenty of great tools to use, and the Wii is incredibly cheap and easy to hack. These are also reasons why I built a retro game console out of one and recommend you do too!
Needed:
– Wii
– SD card (any size) or HDD
Required homebrew application (either one):
– USB Loader GX (requires cIOS)
– Cleanrip (does not require cIOS)

Wii and Gamecube games – using a PC
Difficulty: 1 (very easy)
This method may be super easy, but there’s a catch. Unfortunately, it’s only compatible with certain disc drives, so it’s likely your PC won’t be able to read GameCube or Wii games. Here’s alink to a list of drives that are compatible.

Wii U & Wii games – using a Wii U
Difficulty: 3 (moderate)
This is a great method if you have a Wii U, and it’s the only way to rip Wii U games. It can also dump Wii games, using the same method as on an actual Wii. However, this method is a little more difficult and risky because it’s more complicated to install homebrew on a Wii U console compared to the Wii.
Needed:
– Wii U
– SD Card or HDD
Required homebrew applications:
– Disc2App (for ripping Wii U discs)
– USBLoaderGX or CleanRip (for ripping Wii discs)
